S5E10: Mulling Plastic Flowers & Mixed Signals

PlasticOrchidFactory_DigitalFolk_2.jpg

We split forces these past two weeks to catch Plastic Orchid Factory’s Digital Folk at Spazio Performativo and Good Women Dance Collective’s new full-length presentation of The Signal at their annual Convergence showcase. And, we begin our lament on the announcement that Vue Weekly, the city’s last bastion of dedicated print arts media, will cease production at the end of the month (sniffle). Get the kleenex, noses are running.

As promised, here’s a recipe for Mulled Wine, courtesy of The Spruce Eats. Stay warm, and enjoy! Also, note that there is some adult language in this episode.

Season 4 Episode 6

We’re going down—way down—to Hadestown, folks. Destined for Broadway after the Citadel hosts its Canadian stage debut, Hadestown is a new musical based on the eponymous album by folk superstar Anais Mitchell, developed for stage by director Rachel Chavkin. We caught some dance, too. Thoughts on Good Women Dance Collective‘s annual showcase, Convergence, come in after (wait for it) Hadestown spoilers. Join us the road to hell—it’s warmer than YEG for sure.

Season 3 Episode 10

It’s a YEG miracle: Paul has never seen a Ukrainian dance show. So, we take him to Shumka’s latest production, KOBZAR. Incidentally, Fawnda also sees an intriguing collaboration with Good Women Dance Collective and ProCoro: Love/Fail.

Season 3 Episode 7: Chinook Series

Fawnda’s away, leaving Paul to hold down the blanket fort as we continue our coverage of the 2016 Chinook Series. In this episode Paul chats with Ainsley Hillyard about the Good Women Dance Collective‘s New Work Award. They’re joined by last year’s winner Anastasia Maywood and this year’s recipient Aimee Rushton. Then we sit down with Stephanie Morin-Robert and Alastair Knowles to get the skinny on their show Half Inch Thick.

Season 3 Episode 4

It’s a stacked episode, folks. Fawnda recounts her hike to the Banff Centre for Ballet BC‘s stunning 30th Anniversary showcase featuring works by Cayetano Soto, Stijn Celis, and Crystal Pite. Then, she and Paul unpack their thoughts on Convergence, the opening show of Good Women Dance Collective‘s season. Let’s just say there are no apologies made. By anyone. Ever.

Season 2 Episode 17: Expanse Festival Day 3

Day three at Expanse sees Anastasia Maywood, winner of the Good Women Dance New Work Award, visit the coat check. Then we catch up with Christine Frederick of Alberta Aboriginal Arts for a conversation about indigenous representation in arts, liberal sensitivities, and the complicated lines that art sometimes has to cross.

Season 2 Episode 16: Expanse Festival Day 2

Expanse Day 2: We track down Lara Kramer and the cast of Native Girl Syndrome to talk about realism in performance, and Kate Stashko visits the coat check hot off the heels of her premiere showing of The Matryoshka Series in the East Meets West program.

Season 2 Episode 13

Paul braves the blanket fort and Fawnda‘s head cold for a rousing conversation about BEARS, Pyretic Productions‘ latest theatrical work which featured so much dance, we couldn’t resist covering it. Also: The line-up for the Expanse Movement Arts Festival has been released, and we’re pretty darn excited about it.

Season 2 Episode 8

Paul and Fawnda take in a full weekend of dance: Good Women Dance Collective‘s Convergence with Rebecca Sawdon‘s  table-monster-beast, followed by Brian Webb Dance Company‘s Prairie Dance Circuit, featuring orgasms, live birth, vomiting and ejacu… other everyday bodily functions. Enjoy!

Season 2 Episode 6

A rare treat in this week’s episode: Paul sits down to talk with acclaimed Canadian dance legend Peggy Baker. She’s in town doing intensives with the Good Women Dance Collective and Orchesis Dance and we were very glad to have run into her.
